ROLEX MILGAUSS 40MM GREEN Reviewed

So many people ask me about the Rolex Milgauss. It’s a watch I’ve always liked, never knew a ton about, and haven even tried on. Previously Enjoyed Watch has a super unique Rolex Milgauss that I’m testing out for you guys. Lets learn about this watch together.

It all started in 1956 when Rolex launched a new sports model called the Milgauss. It was intended to be a watch that could withstand high magnetic fields. Its name Milgauss comes from two french words; ‘Mille’ (meaning one thousand) and ‘Gauss’ (meanings, magnetic fields unity of measure). This watch can withstand magnetic fields of 1000 gauss. To put this into perspective, a regular watch can be affected by magnetic fields of 50 to 100 gauss.

The first Rolex Milgauss – produced in 1956

There were a couple different variations that came after the first model. Reference 6541 was introduced shortly after, bringing substantial innovations. The movement is housed in a fully antimagnetic housing unit. The second hand also got its famous bolt shape.

In the 60s began the big changes for the Rolex Milgauss. They changed to a smooth bezel and dial. The second hand went away from the ‘bolt’ and became straight.  This ref. 1019 was in production for about 25 years. There were small modifications but ultimately the Milgauss just wasn’t doing well enough and Rolex stopped production. They produced a watch with too small of a niche market and it just wasn’t selling they way they wanted.

In Bazelworld 2007, Rolex reintroduced the Milgauss to the world. It was a little bigger than before, going from 38mm to 40mm and they brought back the ‘bolt’ from the original. the new reference is 116400 and was using a caliber 3131.

The stainless steel case is 40mm in diameter with sapphire crystal and with text on the caseback. Rolex accomplishes the anti-magnetic properties of this watch by making use of the “Faraday Cage” construction, in which a soft iron inner case completely surrounds the movement, shielding it from any magnetic field. This watch is extremely popular with scientists, engineers and doctors.

“The main innovation at the heart of the Milgauss’s resistance to magnetic interference is the shield inside the Oyster case. This shield, which consists of two parts manufactured respectively from different ferromagnetic alloys, surrounds and protects the movement. It is engraved with the symbol for magnetic flux density – a “B” with an arrow above it.”

It seems the Rolex Milgauss has found its place in the Rolex catalog. It is a model that stands out from their other steel timepieces; such as the submariner and GMT. Its price point is extremely attractive. It can be a great watch for both new watch buyers and that want to purchase a watch by one of the best and most recognizable brands in the world. It can also be a great model for watch collectors looking to add something different to their collection. This watch doesn’t get all the hype and celebrity exposure that other Rolex models do; so wearing this model may in fact stand out more.

Now that we have a grasp on the Milgauss, let’s talk about the model I’m wearing from Previously Enjoyed. This watch is circa 2009 and this amazing stealth-like Milgaus was recreated in Beverly Hills Watch lab with its special DLC black carbon coating. This coating resists fading and scratching, and best of all… it is STUNNING!

The thing I immediately noticed when I picked it up was the watch was its weight… it’s so lightweight! It isn’t like any other stainless steel watch I’ve worn. Hard to explain the feeling other than to say it like heaven. I hate a super heavy watch for a number of reasons , but the Milgauss Rolex model is a watch thats meant to be worn daily and having it be so lightweight makes that an easy thing to do.

Previously Enjoyed did an unbelievable job at ‘blacking out’ this timepiece! The DLC coating is done in house at Beverly Hills Watch and it really takes the Rolex Milgauss to the next level in my opinion. The ‘blacked out’ look really brings the focus onto the colours and details  in the case. The beautiful green around the glass, the brilliant stones on the 3, 6, 9 position and the orange ‘bolt’.

If you’re looking to buy a Rolex and wanting something different then the normal starters (Submariner or GMT), the Milgauss is a wonderful option. Having this one customized and ‘blacked out’, takes it to another level. Guarantee this watch won’t be around for long – get in HERE
