🚨 Before we get started… in other watch news 🚨Patek Phillip discontinuing the model 5711… WOW. Their most successful model has now been discontinued. So congrats to anyone who is lucky enough to have this baby in their collection… not me 😢.
Now… back to regular scheduled programming. I’m starting off 2021 with a trip back in time; we are going to head back to 1966 and check out an awesome vintage Rolex from Previously Enjoyed. I don’t get to review vintage watches very often, and not normally a Rolex – so this will be an extra special way to kick off the year!
The first Rolex Submariner went into produced in 1953. In the 1960s Rolex made some changes from the original Submariner. “Shoulders” were added to the crown side of the case to provide protection for the winding/setting mechanism. These rounded shoulders in models 5512 and 5513 were both fitted with the oversized crown, which thereafter became a standard feature of the Submariner line.

What makes this watch even cooler… it’s the watch Roger Moore made famous as James Bond in the 1973 ‘Live and Let Die’ film. The watch was modified for the film – The Submariner got lots of screen time, mainly because Roger Moore (James Bond), was sleeveless for a large portion of the film played on a Caribbean island. But the watch gets the most exciting screen time during the action sceens. “Q”, Bonds spy gadget developer, modifies the watch with some impressive features. The Rolex was fitted with two new “complications” which you are hard pressed to find in any other Submariner (certainly not the one I’m reviewing). It could create a hyper intensified magnetic field, strong enough to deflect bullets or unzip dresses without the use of one’s hand (oh… the 70s, lol). The film showcases this by preparing a separate ref. 5513 with red hour markers, this indicated that the magnetic function was active for viewers.

The Rolex Submariner ref. 1513 was in produced from 1962–1990. Previously Enjoyed has a model available from circa 1966. Lets get the details

Wearing this watch was extra special. Not just because I’m a huge 007 fan, but because I just loved wearing a piece of history. I love vintage fashion and cars and the same applies to watches. It’s just so cool to think of all the places the watch has been and the stories it holds within. It feels lighter than a new stainless steel Submariner but otherwise similar feel to a newer Sub. The crystal is not sapphire, its Hesalite – I’m not sure I’ve seen a watch with it before. It has more of a bubble shape than the clean look on todays Subs. The beautiful patina on this watch is just what collectors are looking for. It makes looking at the watch such a unique experience. A real watch with tons of character.

Weather your looking to buy your first watch or you are a collector, Rolex is always a good purchase. Stainless Steel Rolex is an even better purchase.
